Breaking Addictions

The primary step to breaking addiction is…that you can’t do it alone.  Your going to need something from outside of yourself. People who find recovery do it with others who are also in recovery.

People who try to do it with other people who are still using or still behaving in that manner usually don’t find recovery.

People usually find a twelve step group. Others will find a small group through a place of faith, others will turn to faith. To find a God who is without, or outside of themselves, rather than turning to  themselves to overcome the addiction.

Others find a good counselor to help them, but, the primary step is realizing that you can’t do it and your powerless and your life has become unmanageable and therefore you turn to a system that can provide meaningful and effective support.

It’s like this. If you come to an acceptance that you have cancer, what you do is, you act like you have cancer. What that means is, you change your diet, your sleeping habits, you go find a medical doctor or health professional to get the consultation, the medication or diet, the chemo, whatever it is that you think you might need. You change your environment and lifestyle because you know you cannot overcome it by yourself.

And you develop a network in order to beat the condition that your experiencing. It happens with everything. Let’s say you want to get in shape or run a marathon. It’s very difficult to run the marathon by yourself. You need a network. There’s people to exercise with, to run with, you have to change your diet or sleeping habits and…those social environments are absolutely critical in order to help work through your addiction.

“Take the necessary steps to overcome addictions in your life.”
